József Wágner Csabai Painter

1888 - 1967

Painter. Born on 27 May 1888 in Mezőtúr in an evangelical family. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1920 he won the prize of the town of Békéscsaba, where he began his career. In 1943 he was awarded the Halmos Izidor Lifepicture Prize, and in 1940 the Prize of the Hungarian Watercolour and Pastel Painters' Association. In 1945 in Mezőtúron where he worked as a teacher. He was a member of the Tokaj Artists' Association. He was a regular exhibitor from 1920. Between the two world wars, he often took part in collective exhibitions at the Ernst Museum, the National Salon and the Kunsthalle. From the 1950s he was a regular participant in exhibitions in Szolnok and Békéscsaba. He organized solo exhibitions of his works in 1948 and 1964 in Mezőtúr, and in 1965 in Békéscsaba. After his death, in 1986 and 1988, a memorial exhibition of his works was held in the Munkácsy Museum in Békéscsaba, and in 1987 in the Damjanich Museum in Szolnok. His works can be found in the collections of the museums of Békéscsaba, Szolnok and Debrecen.
