János Jakuba

1909 - 1974

DESCRIPTION János Jakuba (Békéscsaba, 28 March 1909 - Bp., 14 March 1974): painter, Munkácsy Prize winner (1959). He was a student of Gyula Rudnay and István Réti at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1927 and 1931. From 1935 he exhibited in Budapest (1937) and in Slovakia (1958). He taught at the Teacher Training College in Eger, then in 1961 he became a teacher at the College of Applied Arts, later deputy director. In the last years of his life he worked at the Szentendre Artists' Centre. In his paintings, rural landscapes, worker and peasant figures appear in delicate colours and in strictly structured compositions. In Budapest, a collective exhibition of his works was held at the Csók Gallery (1967).
