He studied in Vienna, Munich and Budapest. At first he painted life pictures with a naturalistic approach. He exhibited at the Kunsthalle from 1890. From 1895 he painted mainly historical pictures, altarpieces and wall paintings, and with increasing mastery he created monumental compositions of excellent structure. In 1921 he was one of the founding members of the Benczúr Society, later becoming its first president, and resumed his presidency in the 1930s. From 1925 he taught at the College of Fine Arts.
