Miklós Borsos sculptor, graphic artist, medalist Sibiu, 1906-08-13 Budapest, 27 January 1990. 19090-1996. He interrupted his studies at secondary school to become a goldsmith in his father's workshop. He made a living as an engraver until 1940. In 1925 he exhibited his drawings, from 1927 he also made etchings. He became a painter. In 1928-1929 he travelled around Italy and the South of France, while he was briefly a student of Oszkár Glatz at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. From 1931 he also made sculptures. He first hammered and bent copper plate, then wood from 1932 and stone from 1933. In 1934 he gave up painting for good. From the 1940s he became a major illustrator, and from 1947 he made coins. 1946-1960: teacher at the Hungarian College of Applied Arts, 1981-1986 at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. His early works include dramatic works akin to Expressionism (Weeping Women, 1939), but his art is more characterised by a lyrical tone or a subtle melancholy (Merengő). His main works belong to the European sculptural tradition of Arp and Brâncuşi. He combines this with the "Pannonian spirit", which has its source in the Transdanubian landscape (the former Roman province of Pannonia) and its cultural tradition. The sculptures, made of special marbles and very sensitively worked, merge myth and history with the simplistic natural forms. He has produced hundreds of medals and plaques.
